A. Gus Kious, MD is the President for Huron Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Dr. Kious began as Senior vice President of Medical Management of Euclid, Hillcrest, Huron and South Pointe hospitals. In this capacity he had responsibility for Case Management, Quality Management, Accreditation, Laboratory Services, Pharmacy Services, Cardiopulmonary Services Behavioral Medicine Services, and Chronic Disease Services for all four hospitals.

 

After a six month temporary stint at Ashtabula County Medical Center as its Acting CEO, Dr. Kious was offered and accepted his present position at Huron Hospital in August 2004. Dr. Kious has led successful efforts to dramatically reduce ambulance diversion, improve whole house efficiency so that Huron could be more relevant and available to the communities in which it serves. These efforts have already produced dramatic improvements in volume, services, and financial performance.

Dr. Kious’ areas of strength are medical operations, strategic planning and execution, team building, education, outcomes management and health care disparities.

 

He was previously in private practice at Hillcrest and Lutheran Hospitals and at one time shared duties as one of the Team Physicians for the Cleveland Indians.

Dr. Kious earned his Medical Degree at Case Western Reserve Medical School in 1977 and finished a residency in Family Medicine at Fairview General Hospital in 1980. He is a member of the AMA, AAFP, ACPE and ACHE professional organizations. His main professional interests are managing medical operations and chronic disease.

 

Dr. Kious was co-chair of the Visioning Process for Cleveland Heights, a member of the Heights Arts Board, a member of the Center for Families and Children’s Board and former Board Member of the Westside Community House. Dr. Kious is a 2000 graduate of Leadership Cleveland. He presently serves on the Windemere Renaissance Board which is dedicated to the development of property in the vicinity of Windemere Methodist Church in East Cleveland. He is a member of the Redeemer United Methodist Church in Cleveland Heights.

Charles Modlin, MD is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist and Director of Center for Minority Health at the Cleveland Clinic and Huron Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Hospital. He graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Chemistry and received his medical school education at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago graduating in 1987.

He completed his six-year Surgery/Urology Residency at New York University in 1993 and then completed a 3 year Fellowship in Basic Science Transplant Immunology and Clinical Renovascular Surgery and Renal Transplantation. He is board-certified in Urology and member of many organizations. In 1996, Dr. Modlin joined the Staff of Cleveland Clinic’s Urological Institute with joint staff appointment within the Clinic’s Transplant Center.

 

In that capacity, Dr. Modlin established himself as exceptional staff physician and one of only 15 African American Transplant Surgeons in the United States. Dr. Modlin’s success and passion for minority health disparity led to outstanding initiatives and contributions toward the elimination of health care disparities.

Dr. Modlin’s efforts toward elimination of health disparities have earned him Proclamation and Special Recognition by Cleveland’s Mayor and City Council President. In addition, Dr. Modlin was voted as one of “Cleveland’s Most Interesting People” in the First Edition of “Who’s Who in Black Cleveland”. Dr. Modlin has initiated a grass-roots campaign toward educating the minority community about healthcare and preventive health and made numerous appearances and speaking engagements at churches, health fairs, television and radio stations and print media.

 

In 2003, he was the founder and Director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center which gained national prominence. The center provides direct patient care, patient education, research and community outreach to minority men. The MMHC expanded to Huron Hospital in August of 2006 as a component of the newly developed Center for Minority Health.

Michael Lawson, MBA is a Vice President at the Cleveland Clinic and Huron Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Hospital. He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College with a degree in Business and Communication and received his master’s degree in Business Administration at Cleveland State University.

 

In 1985, after working for the Operation Division at General Electric, Mr. Lawson accepted an entry level position within the Division of Operation at the Cleveland Clinic. After one year, Mr. Lawson’s capabilities allowed him to advance to a clinical position performing chest x-rays and leading a portable radiography operations within the cardiac intensive care units. He used this four year opportunity to expand his radiological services from two to six ICUs, increase his knowledge base of clinical care and excel in service to patients, physicians and nurses.

 

Success in the clinical role allowed Mr. Lawson to maintain his job to fund his education, attend week-end college and graduate in 1990. In addition to his full time position, Mr. Lawson also worked part-time to gain administrative experience. These additional efforts led to an administrative leadership role in Quality Management Office working closely with clinical administrators. In this capacity Mr. Lawson helped administrators increase through put, revenue, and patient satisfaction by managing projects related to improving delivery of care, billing and documentation, quality management and customer service related processes.

 

Mr. Lawson became an administrator in 1994 and had responsibility for physician practice management, community relations, strategic planning, fiscal management and P & L accountability, recruitment, supervision of management team, facility maintenance, and overseeing operations in various clinical departments. Through Mr. Lawson’s leadership, his team produced significant improvements in volume, service, access to care, cost reductions and financial performance.

In 2001 to 2006 Mr. Lawson advanced to an executive level division administrator and vice president positions where he assisted the CEO and President in special projects and led operational and fiscal performance of key strategic clinical services, community relations activities and institutional initiatives relative to divisional and hospital performance.

 

Mr. Lawson is member of ACHE, NAHSE, and MGMA professional organizations. He was the first African American male administrator on a clinical division level, recognized by the mayor of the city, and selected as a member of Kaleidescope Magazine's 40-40 Club. In addition, he helped establish the new Center for Minority Health at Huron Hospital.
